Inflammation is associated with a number of health problems, including heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure and even cancer. Dr. Mark Liponis, medical director of Canyon Ranch, shares his expertise on how to identify, treat and prevent inflammation in the body.

"Inflammation is a stress reaction of the immune system for any reason—from infection, for example," Liponis said. "It could be from an injury or some process in the body like an auto-immune disease." "It’s very nonspecific," he added."It can affect the whole person."
According to Liponis, there are blood tests, which can detect low levels of inflammation in the body. Doctors can either look at white blood cell count—the higher the count, the more inflammation—or look at c-reactive protein, which is an even more accurate test that can find levels of inflammation so low a person can’t feel them. To prevent inflammation, Liponis recommended a few simple steps, including regular exercise, staying at a healthy weight, and taking various supplements such as vitamin D and fish oil. For a person who already has inflammation, the same recommendations apply—however, Liponis said it may be necessary to follow them more strictly. In other words, a person with inflammation may need to exercise even more than a person without inflammation or increase his or her intake of supplements.

Myositis Pain and Inflammation

 

Inflammatory myositis is among a group of autoimmune diseases characterized by skeletal muscle weakness, elevated serum creatine kinase, and abnormalities seen on electromyography. These disorders often require long-term immunosuppression, usually with corticosteroids and second-line agents such as methotrexate.

However, prolonged use of steroids has been linked to numerous adverse cardiovascular side effects as well as to osteoporosis, cataracts, and increased risk of infections.

Epidemiologic studies have identified a strong association between atherosclerosis and other systemic autoimmune disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus, but the cardiovascular risk profile of patients with inflammatory myositis has not been previously studied.

The researchers initially set out to document the complications of corticosteroid and immunosuppressive treatment among patients with myositis. So Limaye and colleagues conducted a review of medical records and pathology reports from 344 patients who were enrolled in the South Australian myositis database between 1980 and 2009. However, they found themselves

"surprised by an extremely high background prevalence of hypertension and diabetes mellitus in our cohort,"
the authors wrote.

The most commonly used immunosuppressive drugs were methotrexate, used in 83 patients, and azathioprine, given to 48 patients. Smaller numbers received hydroxychloroquine, cyclosporine, mycophenolate mofetil, and intravenous immunoglobulin.

The researchers first considered the presence or absence of comorbidities regardless of the timing of treatment in relation to a diagnosis of myositis.

In addition to the high prevalence of hypertension and diabetes, osteoporosis was also more prevalent in those with myositis compared with the overall Australian adult population (32% versus 3.4%).

However, chronic, low-level inflammation (sometimes referred to as systemic or silent inflammation) has now been coupled with diseases ranging from heart disease, diabetes, and cancer to depression, Alzheimer’s, and osteoporosis. Inflammation also appears to be a key factor in skin aging and other obvious signs of aging.

How to avoid it - and relieve pain if you get it

Shingles affects over one million people in North America each year. It is extremely painful. So how does a person get shingles? And more importantly, are there ways of avoiding it?

What causes shingles?
Outbreaks of shingles (rashes or blisters on the skin) are associated with the virus, Varicella zoster. Most people are exposed to this virus when they get the chickenpox. Others contract the virus but have no outbreak or symptoms. This virus usually infects us when we are children; about three million children are infected each year. Once the acute phase of the virus is past, it is thought that the virus remains dormant in the nervous system until it breaks out again as shingles.

The virus is essentially the same in both chickenpox and shingles. But while chickenpox is very contagious, shingles is not. Interestingly, if a person who has never had chickenpox is exposed to the open blisters of someone with shingles, they catch chickenpox, not shingles!

I mentioned that there is a strong association between the virus and the disease. However, this association is far from cause and effect, as many people who test positive for the virus never get chickenpox or shingles. And, only a tiny fraction of the people who have the virus ever get shingles.

So, the pertinent question is, how can I reduce my risk of getting shingles?

Reducing the risk
Viruses are funny creatures. They behave by rules that are very different from any other life form. In fact, viruses may not even qualify as life forms because they have no cells; they are simple strands of DNA or RNA that penetrate a host cell. Once inside the host, a virus will cause the cell DNA to produce copies of the virus, which is how a virus reproduces.

When a virus enters your body you may not show a single symptom. Not even one! Right now, it is very likely there is a live rhinovirus in your nose because almost everyone has it. As long as your passive immune system functions properly you will not have any signs or symptoms of infection even though you may be 100 percent infected.

So You have decided to do something to get back to a healthy weight. You've shifted into 1st gear by making that choice and now you are ready for 2nd gear and to begin taking the unwanted pounds and inches off your body. Some of these you will have heard before, but when you put them all together, they can be powerful!

  • Begin keeping a journal of everything you eat and drink! — Sometimes we don't even realize how much we are taking in, or we find out our habits are starving our body and that is from where the problems stem.
  • Start drinking more water — ideally 1 ounce of water for every 2 pounds of weight. (# pounds/2 = how many ounces you should be drinking daily) — This allows us to flush toxins in our system and allows for faster fat burning.
  • Cut back on your sugar intake — sodas, highly processed carbohydrates, white sugar.
  • Increase your fiber content — more raw veggies, and use products with higher fiber content –LOOK at the labels.
  • Stop taking any artificial sweeteners!
  • Increase your activity — even if it's just adding a short walk after dinner — Get moving!
  • Give yourself a pat on the back You are doing something to make your life better and you are setting a great example for our youth!

- Eating Patterns

In addition to what to eat, another important factor is when to eat. I highly advise against skipping meals and eating one or two meals in an entire day. Doing this puts your body into starvation mode. This means that the next time you eat, your body will store a lot of that food as fat as it doesn't know when it's going to be fed again! Instead, you want to be eating 6 small meals through out the day. This maintains your blood sugar levels, increases your metabolism, and keeps your body burning fat all day long.

- Cardio

It's highly recommended that you throw in some form of cardio work out. This could be running, cycling, swimming, skipping, or even fast-paced walking. This will help in speeding up the fat burning process and will result in faster results.

- Ab Building Exercises

This is probably the least important factor when it comes to achieving 6 pack abs, believe it or not. As mentioned before, everyone already has a 6 pack of abs underneath that layer of fat. However, performing ab exercises will help in shaping and increasing the definition of your abs. It will also aid in burning calories which will result in fat loss too.

It's crucial that you apply the correct combination of the above points. There are so many exercises and diets out there that simply result in fat gain and back ache, so please be cautious about what you read.
